This month, we’re excited to feature Jayci Goodwin, a current student in Missouri State University’s Physician Assistant Studies Graduate Program. From the moment she stepped onto campus for her interview, Jayci knew MSU was the right place for her.
“The program is run by some amazing, caring people, and I knew it would be the best place for me to learn how to be a great healthcare provider”

Pursuing a master’s degree at Missouri State
For Jayci, choosing Missouri State University’s Physician Assistant Studies Graduate Program (PA Program) was more than just an academic decision—it was a reflection of her passion to serve others. She was inspired by the program’s emphasis on assisting communities in critical need of healthcare. Beyond the program’s commitment to making a difference, MSU also offered the ideal balance of opportunity and proximity, allowing her to pursue her education while staying within a drivable distance from home. This combination made MSU the perfect place for Jayci to take the next step in her journey toward becoming a healthcare provider.
“I decided to pursue a graduate degree here because MSU PA program’s emphasis on serving communities in need really resonated with me, and I wanted to be a drivable distance from home.”
Transformative courses for healthcare career growth
Jayci values her course in Medical Human Anatomy, where the mix of engaging lectures and hands-on lab work with Dr. Brooks and Nicole Gorley made learning anatomy an unforgettable experience. “They are both so knowledgeable and amazing teachers,” Jayci shares. On top of that, Clinical Medicine was another highlight for Jayci, giving her the chance to finally dive into the practice of medicine. When asked about her professors, Jayci mentions, “I can’t pick a favorite professor in the program, I love them all!”.
Navigating work-life balance as a graduate student
For Jayci Goodwin, one of the most challenging aspects of her journey in the PA Program was the transition to being a full-time student year-round. The demanding coursework required significant time and effort outside of the classroom, but Jayci was determined to push through. “The coursework is rigorous and requires a lot of time and effort outside of the classroom, but it is doable!” she says. To overcome these challenges, Jayci adjusted her study habits, learning how to multitask effectively and understanding that quality studying mattered more than the quantity of time spent. She also prioritized self-care, setting aside designated time to “fill her cup,” which helped her stay focused and balanced throughout the program.
A Memorable Milestone: The White Coat Ceremony
After months of hard work and dedication, the moment she donned her white coat was a powerful reminder her hard work. “We worked so hard all year and putting that coat on reminded me why I spent 12 straight months studying!” Jayci reflects. The ceremony was not just a celebration of her achievements, but also a symbol of her commitment to becoming a caring and skilled healthcare professional.
