“If it is your goal – go for it. You will learn so much more than you realize and reaching that goal will be a great feeling.”
Motivation to pursue master’s degrees at Missouri State
Colleen’s academic journey began with her passion for communication. She started a Master of Arts in Communication because of her love for the field and her desire to teach. “I love the field of communication, and I enjoy teaching in that field,” she shares. To strengthen her professional profile, Colleen also pursued the Master of Science in Administrative Studies (now Master of Professional Studies). “I felt that some employers might want to see someone with an administrator’s type of degree,” she explains. The combination of evening classes and an online program made Missouri State University the perfect fit for her busy schedule as a full-time professional.
Navigating work-life balance as a graduate student
For Colleen, balancing two graduate programs while working full time was one of the biggest challenges she faced. Managing her time was not easy, especially with the demanding coursework and her busy work schedule. “Time was a very limited resource for me, and the assignments were no joke,” she says.
“I struggled, sometimes, to get everything done and keep my life (and work schedule) outside MSU going.”
To manage it all, Colleen set aside early mornings and late nights for reading and completing assignments. Her dedication and careful planning helped her balance the demands of both work and school.
A Memorable Milestone: The Graduation Ceremony
When asked about her proudest professional accomplishment, Colleen speaks of the moment she completed her two graduate degrees. “I will never forget the feeling when I attended that final graduation ceremony and knew that I had reached my goal,” she says. It was a milestone that signified the dedication and effort she put into her academic journey.
Building lasting connection
One of the most impactful relationships during Colleen’s time at MSU was with Dr. Gloria Galanes, her advisor. “She was always ready to discuss concerns, help with suggestions, and provided a great outlook for this sometimes-stressed student,” Colleen recalls. Working with Dr. Galanes on her seminar paper remains one of her most cherished memories from graduate school. She also found a sense of community in discussions with her classmates, which kept her motivated throughout her journey.
Theories to application
Today, Colleen uses the skills she gained from her dual degrees in her role as the Community Partnerships Coordinator at Southwest Missouri 211. From teaching at Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) to conducting outreach in 30 counties, she continues to apply skills that she developed at MSU. “My position with 211 requires me to do a great deal of outreach… I believe that the skills I gained while completing these two degrees make me a better outreach specialist,” she says.
