Meet Mary Oluwafemi Fakunle: A Graduate Student Shaping the Future of Environmental Chemistry

September 5, 2025 by Nguyen Nam Anh Tran

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Mary Oluwafemi Fakunle, a master’s student in the Chemistry program, whose dedication to environmental chemistry and sustainability is driving her academic journey and career goals. Through hands-on research, meaningful mentorship, and real-world experiences, Mary is preparing to make a meaningful impact in the field. Here’s a closer look at her story.

From Curiosity to Impact: A Graduate Experience Focused on Environmental Chemistry

Mary O. Fakunle is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Chemistry at MO State, and her decision to choose this program was driven by the broad range of focus areas that allowed her to tailor her studies to her passion for environmental and analytical chemistry. “I chose the program because of its breadth of focus areas, allowing me to tailor my studies to my interests in environmental and analytical chemistry,” she explains.

What particularly drew Mary to this program was its combination of rigorous academics and applied research. She was also excited about the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Cyren Rico in his research lab, where she could gain practical experience in environmental chemistry research and contribute to publishable research. For Mary, the program’s affordability, the availability of graduate assistantships, and the supportive academic community made it a great fit. Describing herself as “curious, analytical, and determined”, she is driven by these qualities as she navigates her academic path and strives to contribute to the field of environmental chemistry.

Turning Research into Real-World Solutions with an Internship at Corteva Agriscience

For Mary, one experience during her time as a graduate student stands out is landing an internship with Corteva Agriscience. It wasn’t just a career step; it was a moment that truly connected her academic work to real-world applications.

Mary explains, “The experience was a defining moment where I saw how the skills developed in the lab could be applied in solving real-world challenges in biotechnology and agroscience.” Her research in Dr. Cyren Rico’s lab played a big role in making this opportunity possible. Her hands-on research and the skills she developed in the lab set her up for success outside of school.

Mary credits much of her success to the support and encouragement she received from the people around her. She says, “This experience was made possible through the encouragement of the faculty, the department head, the graduate program coordinator, and my advisor, Dr. Cyren Rico, whose mentorship has been invaluable.”

A Welcoming Community Empowering Students to Succeed

Mary has always felt supported throughout her time as a graduate student, particularly as an international student.  She reflects, “The graduate college, international student services, the chemistry faculty, and fellow students have been constant sources of guidance, encouragement, and support through various events and training which prepares me for life after graduate school.” This sense of community has helped her overcome the challenges of graduate school, providing the support she needed to thrive academically and personally.

In addition to the community support, the graduate education at MO State has given her the technical and professional tools necessary to pursue her career in environmental chemistry and sustainability.

“Through the detailed course work, hands-on research, and guidance of faculty members, I have developed valuable analytical and problem solving skills essential for future career aspirations.”

With a combination of detailed coursework, research practice and faculty mentorship, Mary has developed key analytical and problem-solving skills.

Advice for Future #GradBears

Mary’s advice to anyone considering a graduate degree at MO State is to make the most of the opportunities and support the university offers. She emphasizes the importance of building strong connections and mentorship with faculty members, as well as engaging in research and professional events. “MSU’s welcoming community and excellent resources can prepare you both academically and professionally for a successful career,” she shares. By fully utilizing these opportunities, students can enhance their graduate experience and build a solid foundation for their future careers.
