After an 18 month hiatus, BEAUTIFUL – The Carole King Musical is back on the road and headed to Springfield! We asked some of the cast members about life on the road, what it’s like to tour with such an iconic show, and what audiences can expect. Ben Toomer plays one of the Drifters – the famed group that sings tunes such as “On Broadway,” “Up On The Roof,” and more in the show.
BEN TOOMER (Ensemble) is grateful to return back to this incredible show! Regional credits include: Jubilee (Arena Stage), Les Misérables (Alliance Theater), A Chorus Line (Lexington Theater). Huge thanks to his family and friends, his agents at CGF Talent and the creatives for the opportunity. BFA in Musical Theatre Texas State University. Instagram: B_toomer
What was your path to becoming a professional actor?
I started out in sports from the time I was a young kid until late high school and sort of stumbled into the world of theater. I ended up with my BFA in Musical Theatre (Texas State University), moved to [New York City], started pounding the pavement with auditions and I have not looked back since.
What was the audition process like for this show?
The audition for the show ended up being quite fun. I made a lot of great friends throughout that process. These types of auditions tend to go pretty fast. You’d start in a room with about 8-10 people. The process usually consists of a few dance calls, in-person vocal performances and callbacks at the end.
What’s your favorite part about touring the country with BEAUTIFUL?
I have many favorite parts of touring the country with this show, but I hold onto so much gratitude for the connections and relationships I’ve built throughout this tour experience. Ones that will withstand the test of time. Carole King’s music is the definition of nostalgia. People from all over the country, never fail to express their gratitude for the gifts you’ve given them as the actor. We provide that “flash to the past ” for most. It’s probably one of the highest forms of flattery—We’ve done your job.
What has it been like to return to the stage after a nearly two-year break?
The best word I can give you to describe what it feels like to return to the stage after this break is “grounding.” I think I can speak for a lot of actors and say that this period of time has allowed us to re-purpose our priorities and cultivate higher versions of who we are as people. I think returning to the show in the form that we are in collectively has only made a much more powerful experience. I know the audience can feel it too.
What do you enjoy most about performing BEAUTIFUL every night?
The best part about performing this show every night is no matter how you’re feeling, no matter your circumstances or beliefs for that day…for two hours and 30 minutes, we get to experience the highest form of joy and love through Carole’s music. As artists, there is no better feeling.
What’s something that will surprise audiences about this show?
Audiences will be the most surprised by how many songs Carole King has actually written more so for others than herself.
Favorite Carole King song?
“You’ve Got A Friend”
What item can’t you live without while on tour?
My beanies (Warmth is a necessity).
If you weren’t an actor, what profession would you pursue?
If I weren’t an actor, I would have loved to take my shot at either interior design or professional ballet dancing.
Dream role?
Robert Kincaid in The Bridges Of Madison County.
