As of September 6, there have been 450 cases of severe lung illness reported nationwide (this has more than doubled in the last week) and 5 deaths linked to vaping. With the rise of severe lung illness and deaths caused by vaping, federal health officials are warning and urging people to stop vaping. Doctors and health officials are unsure exactly what chemical or substance from vaping/e-cigarettes are causing healthy young people, between the ages of 18-25, to become impacted with this severe lung illness. There is an ongoing investigation to determine the cause of the severe lung illness and the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is alerting individuals to not use vaping or e-cigarette products. People who are using these products need to be aware of symptoms associated with severe lung illness, such as, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea and vomiting (and if they do experience any of the symptoms to seek medical attention promptly). Magers Health and Wellness Center offers a nicotine cessation program for those who are interested in stopping the use of vaping or e-cigarettes. This program is free for students and covered for Missouri State University employees under our insurance plan. Magers Health and Wellness Center also has a grant to help cover the cost of nicotine replacement products to help with cessation efforts. To make an appointment, please call Magers at 417-836-4000.
