In the aftermath of the protests triggered by the extra-judicial killing of George Floyd by police in Minneapolis, the debate over the place in modern America of monuments to the Confederacy has once again flared up nationally. This includes in Springfield, where some are now calling for the removal of a statue of Sterling Price, a senior Confederate office, erected in 1901 in the Springfield National Cemetery. With the controversy growing, KY3 television asked Missouri State’s Dr. Jeremy Neely, a historian of the Civil War, about his opinions on the subject.
