National Save Your Hearing Day is observed annually on May 31 to raise awareness about hearing loss prevention. Our ability to hear is often taken for granted—until it’s impacted. This day serves as an important reminder to take proactive steps to protect our hearing throughout life.
According to the World Health Organization, over 430 million people worldwide have disabling hearing loss—and about half of all hearing loss cases are preventable.
🔊 Why Hearing Health Matters
Noise-induced hearing loss can happen suddenly or over time due to repeated exposure to harmful noise levels. Once hearing is damaged, it typically can’t be restored, making prevention essential.
Tips to protect your hearing:
- Use ear protection in noisy environments (earplugs or earmuffs)
- Keep the volume below 60% when using earbuds or headphones
- Take listening breaks when using audio devices
- Get regular hearing screenings
- Avoid sticking anything into your ears

💡 Hearing-Related Benefits for MSU Employees
Medical Insurance
MSU’s medical plan covers the initial purchase of a hearing aid if the loss of hearing is the result of a surgical procedure performed while coverage is in effect.
In addition, the plan provides coverage for:
- Newborn hearing screenings, necessary rescreenings, audiological assessments, and initial amplification
- Placement or replacement of hearing aids for children up to age 18, in accordance with guidelines administered through MO HealthNet (Missouri Medicaid)
These provisions align with Missouri State Law. Routine hearing exams and hearing aids not meeting these criteria are not covered.
Vision Coverage (VSP)
Employees enrolled in the VSP vision plan have access to TruHearing discounts, which include:
- Discounted digital hearing aids
- Follow-up visits
- Warranties and batteries
Flexible Spending Plan (FSA)
Hearing aids and related out-of-pocket expenses are FSA-eligible. If enrolled in MSU’s flex spending plan, submit eligible expenses to ASIFlex for reimbursement.
