Today has been one of those days you are just grateful to be alive.
The organizations that we worked with today were so obviously filled with loving people. From the moment I met Pam, the manager of Wheeler Missions Thrift Store, I was inspired. Her attitude was so gracious and positive and I only wish we could have spent more time together. Wheeler Missions is the largest not-for-profit organization in Indianapolis that helps provide food, clothing, housing and other necessities to the homeless and others in need. Pam told the story about how her father used to take her to Wheeler Missions to punish her, saying “these people are bad and they can hurt you.” To this, a very wise 12 year old Pam responded that she only saw people who needed love. I will never forget those words. It seems like a simple statement but it holds so much truth.
After our work at Wheeler was finished, we went to DAT House, an after school program for children. As I always do, I found myself quickly becoming attached to the children that came through the doors. They were all so loving, pure and happy. I am around children often so I thought nothing of one of the girls holding my hand and wanting hugs. Later on, these things that seemed like simple acts of affection were put into a different perspective for me. One of the other trip members talked about how the children were so quick to be affectionate with some of us and that this was most likely because they were not receiving enough love and attention at home. I can hope all day that this isn’t the truth but makes enough sense to break my heart.
Love is something humans require. We are built for relationships. If we do not connect with others, we tend to feel that we cannot connect with anything. Today I am so thankful to have learned that a little love goes a long way. Everyone needs it, everyone enjoys it, and everyone is capable of giving it.
