Yesterday was an amazing start to working with our community partners. We began the day atGateway Greening, an urban farm in the city. It was interesting to see the juxtaposition of the farm against the city backdrop. My favorite part of the day was being a part of the harvesting and composting process. Most of the community gardens I’ve worked in focus on weeding and upkeep of the garden when they have volunteers. It was super cool to do something different and see such a big operation so close to the city. In the afternoon we spent time in a community garden in The Ville, the neighborhood we are staying in. This was a much smaller garden, which is more sustainable on a community level. Again we harvested, this time fresh tomatoes and peppers. We used some of this produce for our dinner and breakfast. Using fresh produce we picked the same day was an awesome experience. I’m excited to work in another community garden. Today we are serving with EarthDance. Every gardening operation is a little different and I’ve learned so much these past few days.
