Being on Executive Board this year has been a lot different of an experience that I had expected. I serve as “Director of Retreat, Reflection, and Reorientation” and although I have had my own duties within the role, it’s how I interact with Liz Wyman and Sarah Harp that matters the most to me. This post is partly to brag on them, but also let everyone know the amazing work that leadership in Bear Breaks is doing this school year. From the get go, Liz and Sarah have been amazing teammates to have on Exec Board. Each one of them are busy in their own way, with their own majors, organizations, and personal lives, but I have seen so much hard work coming from each of them. Liz has kicked butt when it’s come to taking charge in Trip Leader meetings and organizing an amazing Weekend Immersion trip to learn and serve in the area of teen homelessness and the LGBTQ+ community. It’s really amazing to see how Liz has lead in how she organizes events and the way she is able to spark conversation from Trip Leaders and trip participants. This has reminded me how important it is to balance between the two. Sarah has been doing a lot of work on creating a Trip Leader manual and a style guide for our social media and publications which will allow our organization to look more official and even friendly. She has been doing this work in part through one of her courses, but she’s set up Bear Breaks for success for long after she’s graduated. This has reminded me how important it is to invest in an organization, even if your impact won’t be fully realized until you’re finished with it. But most importantly, what I love most about the others is that we lead together. We have our own duties, responsibilities, and titles, but we work together to promote Bear Breaks and lead students to becoming Active Citizens passionate about their communities and service. When making decisions for the organization or trip leader meetings, its never “Well, I wanted to do this” or “I was going to do this.” Instead, phrases are “Well, I had this idea but what do we think we can do with that?” or “What do we think is the best way to make this better?” are more common. All together, I think the Executive Board is working great this year. My teammates, Liz and Sarah, are leaders that inspire me and make me want to improve each day. I couldn’t imagine working with a better bunch of people and I am excited to see us finish out the rest of the school year together.
