Hi, my name is Ashton Stropes. I am a freshman at Missouri State University, and I am majoring in Cell and Molecular Biology. I decided to join a Bear Break to have the opportunity to observe and understand another culture while also giving back to the community.
Shifting Perspectives
Although our group has only had the chance to volunteer at the Atlanta Center for Self Sufficiency (ACSS) once, I have already shifted my perspectives on Homelessness. Before this trip, I thought that people were homeless because they fell on hard times and didn’t have the drive to work or help themselves get out of that situation. This is completely false. After meeting the individuals ACSS it became apparent that people do want to improve their lives and are willing to work to change them.
Fighting the Stereotype
People everywhere should understand that homelessness does automatically reflect work ethic or character. Often, the displaced just need a reminder that they can recover. They need a reminder that it’s okay to ask for help and there are people who will help. I have already learned a lot at ACSS and can’t wait to return tomorrow!
