St. James Food Pantry
It was getting close to closing time at the St. James Food Pantry when a elderly client walked into the distribution room. He handed his slip of paper the one of our students working the counter patiently waiting for his bag of food.
While waiting he asked, “are there cookies in the bag?” The students replied, “not today.” The client lowered his head and said, “I have been craving cookies for three days.” Ms. Kathy, the director of the food pantry, slipped off to the back room and came back with a box of graham crackers and handed it to the client and put her finger to her lips giving the shhhhh sound.
A look of amazement crossed the clients face and tears came to his eyes as he took the box and slipped the graham crackers into his bag and said “thank you.”
Reflection
During reflection after our day of service, Ms. Kathy told our group some of her story as a homeless person. How when she was tried of life and ready to end it. A stranger would greet her with a smile and a “good morning” or give her a sandwich, hot chocolate or a pair of socks. And how these simple acts of kinds kept her going.
For the rest of the day I have been thinking about this and the words of wisdom given to me by a special lady and mentor in my life “you can’t go wrong loving people!”
Now, I am purposing in my heart to smile more, love deeper, and spread kindness when given the opportunity.
