Getting Dirty
I must admit, I am not exactly the type who enjoys “roughing it.” My idea of “roughing it” usually includes a place with a clean shower, restroom, and just slightly out of my comfort zone. I must admit, this past week in New Orleans has pushed my boundaries; however, I think this is for the best. I have learned to share a one toilet and two showers with 50+ girls, go into the homes of strangers to help them, as well as get quite literally dirty while pulling out weeds. While I still can’t say I was a fan of the bugs, I do feel as if I have grown quite a bit during this trip. Traveling with Bear Breaks to New Orleans has helped me be more comfortable with the uncomfortable.
Burnell’s
Today on our last day we visited a place named Burnell’s. A few of the other members of the trip had gone earlier in the week and had all mentioned that it was life changing. I was quite a bit skeptical of this because I was not sure how a grocery store could change my life. However, it did just that. The man who owns the grocery store was one of the most selfless humans I have ever met. He has worked so hard to give to his community and it was a true honor to meet him. I am glad I got to meet him at the very end of the trip because it left me with a desire to want to do more for community. I am thankful that I am returning to Springfield a changed person.
