What exactly is sustainability?
I’m glad you asked. Sustainability is meeting the needs of our present life without harming the future generation to meet their own needs. As you can see, this is pretty vague yet direct definition that we can put into a simple equation:
Present Life + Needs = The future generation
Our needs are five things: air, food, water, sleep, and shelter. These are the basic components to survive, but what about to thrive while living in a sustainable way?
During this Spring break Immersion trip in Indianapolis, Indiana, we are going to expand on each of these five needs and relate them back to daily lifestyle practices. By doing this, not only are we thinking about our actions, but our intentions that follow behind them. This will then create a thriving future generation and their needs. Let’s expand our equation:
Present Life + Needs + Sustainable Intentions = A thriving future generation
The Five “What’s”
Everyday we are going to be focusing on a different “What” that will follow one of the five needs. Here are the examples:
- What we use: Water
- What we buy: Shelter
- What we eat: Food
- What we wear: Air
- What are going to do about it: Not sleep on it
Sustainability plays apart in everything; and it’s everywhere too. During this trip, we are going to learn individually but grow as a group while living in another part of the country. Indianapolis is a four star rated city for it’s sustainable practices, therefore we can take what we practice there and apply it into the Springfield area.
