Greetings! October is an exciting month in the communication department. This month’s InCommon blog post comes from the desk of Dr. Eric Morris, Assistant Professor of Communication and Director of MSU Debate.
We hope your fall semester is going well! As we approach MSU Homecoming 2013, we want to let you know that Tom Black, the “Boxcar Millionaire” and America’s Greatest Sales Trainer will be a featured guest of COAL’s Homecoming Celebration. Mr. Black is a major supporter of our debate program, and will be coming to campus for a set of events on Friday, October 18.
First, Mr. Black presents “First out of the Gate: How to Move Up Once You Get in the Door.” He will share his suggestions for students on how to make the most of their first few weeks in their first position after graduation. This event is free and open to the public! Join us in Hill Hall, Room 001, 10:00-10:45 a.m.
Secondly, Mr. Black and other alumni will attend a luncheon at the PSU Union Club following his presentation. This is a great opportunity for networking, including one-on-one discussions with alumni about your career plans. Please RSVP with the communication department (Craig 375, 417-836-4423) as space is limited.
MSU Debate team ranked in the Top 25
Please join Mr. Black in celebrating the start of the new season for Missouri State’s Spicer Debate Forum! The team of Wes Rumbaugh & Jeff Bess is ranked 24th in the nation after a strong start at the Georgia State Tournament, which included wins over Northwestern U., Wake Forest, and Michigan State. The squad also attended UMKC’s tournament, where a group of largely freshman debaters competed in the top division, scoring wins over Baylor, Gonzaga, Whitman, Kansas and Kansas State. The debate program will be traveling to tournaments at University of Kentucky, KCKCC, and Harvard University in October. You can follow their progress on Twitter or Facebook. #debatelikeabear
Tom Black’s Homecoming visit and the success of the MSU Debate Team are just two examples of excellence this month in the Department of Communication at MSU. Stay tuned for more information about department events and accomplishments.
