Public Affairs Mission in Action: Bears With Purpose

Public relations students are participating in the national Bateman PRSSA Competition to raise awareness of the necessity of safe and effective treatment options for children with cancer.

March 3, 2018 by Strategic Communication

Did you know every two minutes a child with cancer receives a diagnosis of cancer? However, only 4 percent of government cancer research funding goes to study childhood cancer. These are some of the facts that four groups of Missouri State University public relations students are trying to bring awareness about.

This year as part of their COM 509 Proseminar in Public Relations class, public relations students from the department of communication are participating in the national Bateman PRSSA Competition. PRSSA challenges participants of the Bateman Case Study Competition to develop a campaign on behalf of With Purpose to bring awareness to the necessity of safe and effective treatment options for children with cancer in America.

The goal of the 2018 Bateman Competition is to increase awareness of the problems surrounding childhood cancer treatment in the United States. Participating teams will achieve this goal, in part, evaluating the current awareness level of childhood cancer treatment and will find creative ways to recruit young people to engage in the organization.

Their campaigns and events in our college and immediate community will run until March 15. So far, students have worked with students in Cowden Elementary, Rountree Elementary and are planning an educational event at Greenwood Laboratory School. They are actively promoting their campaigns on a variety of social media platforms.

“It is exciting to see our PR students furthering MSU’s public affairs mission,” Didem Koroglu, instructor at the department of communication, said.

About the Bateman Case study

The Bateman Case Study Competition is PRSSA’s premier national case study competition for public relations students and gives you an opportunity to apply your classroom education and internship experiences to create and implement a full public relations campaign. After an extensive judging process executed by PRSA members and other professionals, three finalists are chosen to present their campaigns to sponsor representatives. The first-place team receives $3,500 and a trophy; second place receives $2,500 and a plaque; and third place receives $1,500 and a plaque. All teams are recognized at the PRSSA National Conference.
