Strong Hall now houses the International Flag Display, funded by the Student Initiative Fund. Daezia Smith, former SGA Director of Public Affairs, directed the project. SGA voted to pass the initiative in the spring 2017 semester and will continue to monitor the project.
How were the flags chosen?
The flags represent the countries of origin of our international students based primarily on the spring 2017 student demographics. That semester, Missouri State hosted students from 79 countries. That number can fluctuate, so SGA budgeted for 83 flags upon installation.
If you don’t see your flag currently represented, don’t worry! The team for the project is currently working on including all fall 2017 international student flags in the display.
Who’s responsible for the international flag display?
As an SGA initiated monument to the Public Affairs mission, the Director of Public Affairs in the Student Government Association will be responsible for the flags upon project completion.
What makes this display different from the Avenue of Flags?
This display will remain as the backdrop behind the Citizen Scholar as a permanent addition to Strong Hall. It serves as a constant reminder to our international Bears that they are welcome at Missouri State. For the student body in general, it reinforces that our university is home to a wealth of diverse experiences that enrich our entire community. Furthermore, the display embodies the College of Humanities and Public Affairs. It acts as a physical representation of tenants and academic focus of the college.
