English Language Institute (ELI) students enjoy practicing language skills outside of the classroom.
In June, they exchanged Missouri State classrooms for elementary school classrooms. Students in all levels of Speaking courses visited a WING’s class called, “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.”
About WINGS
WINGS is a program for gifted students in the Springfield Public Schools System. Students enrolled in summer school programs to learn about world cultures and languages.
Cultural exchange
ELI students visited the class to provide real-world insight into diverse cultures. WINGS students interviewed 4 ELI students about various facets of their cultures. Popular questions included:
- When do you move out of your family’s home?
- What is considered beautiful in your country?
- What is your country famous for?
- What is freedom?
WINGS students then completed a comparison of the responses. They discovered many similarities between international cultures and their own.
ELI students also taught WINGS students words and phrases in their native language. Students learned how to write their names, basic greetings, and how to count to 10 in each language.
