Cali Pettijohn’s advanced listening class visited a local organization with a global reach. Students completed their English Language Institute course by touring the Askinosie Chocolate factory.
The 8-week course included intensive and extensive listening skills. Intensive skills include noticing grammar, expressions, reduced sounds, and vocabulary. Extensive skills capture main ideas and comprehension.
The visit to Askinosie Chocolate gave students the opportunity to practice their skills with native English speakers. Students were able to speak to their own experiences in some of the regions where Askinosie sources chocolate-making necessities directly from local farmers. They asked questions about the processing in the factory and discussed chocolate-making with other tour guests. Most importantly, they were able to sample the chocolates produced at the factory and decide on their favorites.
Visits like this are important for English language learning and cultural immersion. They give context and meaning to classroom discussions. Experiencing local culture is an opportunity to engage in the Springfield community and learn how Springfield interacts with the rest of the world.
