Throughout October 2023, the ELI planned three cultural mixers for their students. Invited to these mixers were Missouri State University students from Dr. Liang’s freshmen seminar, Professor Pliler’s nursing courses, and Dr. Zimmerman’s Psychology of Diversity course.
Each mixer focused on different topics from medical practices and views to everyday activities in school or at home. Dr. Liang’s freshman students were able to bond over the student experience while Pliler’s students engaged in conversation about healthcare differences across the globe.
In addition to allowing EAP students to practice their English speaking and listening skills, these mixers provide an environment for casual exchange and can promote curiosity about a variety of cultures. They also allow for the realization that, at the end of the day, we’re more alike than different — especially when it comes to the rigors of college.
