As the final moments of 2023 approached, Nhung Nguyen and Madeline Corderman, representing the English Language Institute (ELI) at Missouri State University (MSU), engaged in an enlightening conversation via Zoom with Mamady Koita, a Vice President at Bank of America in New York. Unveiling Mamady’s motivations, recounting his experiences, and sharing the invaluable insights he provides, this dialogue serves as an inspiring narrative for individuals aspiring to attain knowledge and foster personal growth.
When faced with the decision of choosing among various universities in the U.S., Mamady Koita ultimately opted for Missouri State University based on recommendations from an advisor at the U.S. Embassy in Mali over two decades ago. The exceptional reputation of MSU’s MBA program, the appealing living environment of Springfield, Missouri, and the welcoming social culture of the Ozarks were key factors that influenced his choice to join the ELI and MSU.
He fondly recalls his first snowy day when arriving on the campus of MSU and the heartwarming help from the International Services Office. Mamady values the close-knit ELI classrooms, emphasizing the positive connections with teachers and classmates. His immersion in the ELI community, supported by faculty and staff, made a lasting impact. Over time, his engagement evolved, leading him to become the President of the Association of International Students at MSU. Mamady shares valuable advice, encouraging students to embrace the intensive ELI program, participate actively in classes, expand their comfort zones, seek internship opportunities, and get involved in campus organizations. Watching TV programs also proved to be an effective method for improving language skills.
Reflecting on his journey, Mamady credits the ELI for not only improving his English language skills but also preparing him for the professional and diverse social aspects. The ELI’s emphasis on cultural understanding, language practice, and making connections laid the foundation for his continued success at Bank of America. In addition, his experiences, academic achievements, and other factors contributed to landing a current role at the second-largest banking institution in America. Working for Bank of America stands out as Mamady’s proudest career achievement. He emphasizes the institution’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and contributing to the overall U.S. economy through innovative financial solutions.
Mamady also exhibits great enthusiasm for community engagement. After graduation, he actively volunteered and offered support to Upwardly Global in New York and joined community work in West Africa – Mali. Looking forward, Mamady articulates his ambition to empower others in their careers, with a special focus on mentoring the upcoming generation of bankers. His vision includes making meaningful contributions to underserved communities in New York and New Jersey by providing valuable advice, guidance, and support to young individuals navigating both academic and professional paths.
