Held at the Springfield Botanical Gardens on Saturday, April 6, 2024, the Cherry Blossom Kite and Piñata Festival, a beloved annual event, was a lovely celebration of spring and culture. More than 10,000 people attended the event, where they were treated to a full day of live entertainment, kite flying, piñata smashing, and delicious food.
Attendees brought their kites or purchased kits on-site to create colorful masterpieces that filled the sky. Children eagerly took turns whacking piñatas, adding to the festive atmosphere. The event featured captivating performances by various local and regional groups. Uke 66, a group of ukulele musicians who have performed in both of Springfield’s sister cities, kicked off the event. Another highlight was the mesmerizing Mexican folkloric dancers of Grupo Latinoamericano.

Food lovers indulged in a variety of Japanese, Mexican, and American delights from local vendors. The El Champu food truck served mouthwatering tacos, while other popular treats included cheesecake-flavored ice cream and birthday cake-flavored cake pops.

The Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden provided a serene escape, with visitors enjoying the beauty of cherry blossoms, tulips, and peaceful ponds. The mini market offered a selection of Japanese and Mexican snacks, candies, beverages, and unique souvenirs.
