From April 8 to April 12, 2024, Paula Moore, representing the English Language Institute (ELI) and Missouri State University, embarked on a significant business trip to China with the primary objective of visiting Southwestern University (SWU) in Chongqing and the MSU Branch campus in Dalian.
Located in a picturesque suburb of Chongqing, SWU boasts a breathtaking campus surrounded by nature’s wonders – birds, trees, and rivers, painting a picture-perfect paradise. This visit not only provided insights into the remarkable work being done by ELI educators like Angela Rose, and Joshua Conaway but also unveiled opportunities for further enhancement in English education for students in SWU. Paula Moore was delighted to witness the enthusiasm and dedication of the team of English instructors at SWU. The team underscored the importance of fostering an environment conducive to learning.
MSU branch campus in Dalian, China, has been offering students a dynamic education for over 20 years in a city known for its economic importance and cultural richness. Dalian’s strategic port and global investment make it a vibrant destination. With scenic coastlines and modern amenities, students experience an enriching academic journey in this dynamic urban setting.
With a focus on ensuring high-quality instruction, Paula outlined several initiatives aimed at both programs:
- Empowering Educators: In-person boot camps for Dalian’s English teachers will equip them with dynamic teaching strategies.
- Student Readiness: Virtual boot camps for students in Dalian wanting to bolster their English a week or two before beginning their freshman year.
- Immersive Learning: The Hybrid English and Leadership Immersion Program (HELIP) offers students from Dalian and Chongqing immersive language experiences during summer vacations.
- Collaborative Support: creating an on-the-ground teaching team from recent MSU grads who have been GTAs and potentially a rotation of full-time teachers who can provide additional support on a shorter-term basis.
Looking ahead, Paula’s commitment to the advancement of English education remains unwavering. Her plans to return in the early fall semester to provide guidance at both campuses demonstrate her dedication to promoting excellence in teaching and learning. Paula Moore’s trip to China illustrates Missouri State University’s dedication to global education and highlights the transformative impact of cooperation and innovation in shaping the future of English education. Through strategic initiatives and collaborative efforts, the journey towards excellence in English education continues, paving the way for a brighter and more inclusive future.
