The Foreign Language Institute (FLI), Missouri State University (MSU) offers a variety of language classes for different learners. These include credit courses for college and high school students, allowing them to earn transferable college credit, as well as non-credit options for adults and youth. The FLI reflects the University’s commitment to fostering global citizenship and intercultural competence. By providing access to a wide array of language courses and cultural experiences, the FLI equips students with essential tools to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
This Fall, the FLI offers 19 credit courses across 8 languages – Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Kurdish, and Russian – to over 200 students from MSU, Evangel University, Ozarks Technical Community College, and the local Springfield community.
At the beginning of Fall 2024, the FLI expanded its presence by participating in events at Southwest Baptist University (SBU) and Evangel University. Students from these universities, when registered, can receive credit for FLI courses through their home institutions. At the SBU Business Fair, the FLI had an opportunity to introduce its courses and connect with students, encouraging them to consider language studies as part of their academic journey.

The FLI was also represented at the new student orientation at Evangel University, where it showcased the range of language courses available. During the orientation, FLI representatives provided information about the benefits of learning a foreign language, explained how these courses can complement a variety of academic programs, and answered students’ questions about schedules and enrollment.
