Missouri State University once again welcomed students, faculty, and Springfield community members to its annual “Tour of the Globe,” a celebration of cultural diversity. This event offers attendees a chance to experience the world’s diverse cultures through traditional food, performances, music, interactive exhibits, and stories from different parts of the globe.
Hosted by the university’s International Programs, the “Tour of the Globe” event has become a highlight of the campus calendar, drawing in large crowds eager to experience the world without leaving Missouri. Each year, international students hailing from countries from Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and beyond share the richness of their cultures with fellow students, faculty, and community members. This year’s event featured over 30 different countries signed up, each offering unique perspectives and experiences from various cultures.

Besides languages, customs, and traditions, many students were proud to wear and showcase their traditional attire, giving everyone a glimpse into the clothing and styles from their homeland. For food lovers, there was so much to taste with an exquisite array of authentic foods representing flavors from all over the world. From West African jollof rice, Caribbean jerk chicken to Asian treats, every bite brought a taste of faraway lands.

Besides all the fun, “Tour of the Globe” also provided a learning experience. There was something to learn about each country’s history, geography, and traditions at each cultural room/station. Students visiting each country could receive stamps in sort of a “passport” entry into the country creating a fun incentive to explore every corner of the event.

For many international students, “Tour of the Globe” is more than just a celebration; it’s an opportunity to share their heritage and helping others understand and appreciate the beauty and complexity of their home countries. Joshua Mugabi, a freshman student from Uganda shared his thoughts, saying, “This event gives us a chance to tell our own stories and show the unique parts of our culture. Seeing people interested in learning about my country is such a great feeling.” The event shows the university’s dedication to creating more cultural awareness within the university and the Springfield community at large. As one attendee put it, “It’s like taking a trip around the world in just one day!”
