Missouri State University is home to a diverse community of students from around the world. At the heart of this cultural exchange are the international conversation circles – small, informal gatherings in which participants discuss various topics in English. This is a program organized by the English Language Institute (ELI) under the umbrella of Global Education and Engagement (GEE). These conversation circles give international students unique opportunities to practice English, build friendships, and foster understanding in a welcoming environment.
Cali Pettijohn, ELI academic specialist organizes the logistics for the conversation circles and is supported by the university students who plan, support, and lead the discussions. In turn, EAP (English for Academic Purpose) students at the ELI also volunteer to lead, giving them an opportunity to practice their English skills while sharing stories and perspectives. These sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the term, at the Meyer library and Jim D. Morris Center to accommodate designed activities and participation. Best of all, the program is free and open to everyone. Whether you’re an international student eager to practice English, a domestic student curious about other cultures, or a community member looking to connect, there’s a seat for you at the circle. Ilia Ruchevskii an EAP student from Russia shared his thoughts, “I have had the best experiences from the conversation circles because it is an excellent speaking and listening practice.”

The benefits of joining a Conversation Circle go way beyond language practice. Participants gain improved communication skills, confidence in speaking, and great insights into different cultures. It’s also a great way to make lasting friendships and connections within the MSU and Springfield communities. For native English speakers, it’s an opportunity to learn about the experiences of international students and share their own culture in return. “My experience has been one of mutual interest and community”, remarked Eli Jahconway, MSU student from Springfield, Missouri. “I have been very grateful to meet and learn about new cultures and new people”.
