As the fall semester of 2024 draws to a close, the Office of Global Education and Engagement at Missouri State University (MSU) shines a spotlight on Mason Gaspard, the International Services Coordinator and Designated School Official (DSO). In a recent interview, Mason shared his role in supporting international students, navigating U.S. immigration complexities, and empowering students to thrive both academically and professionally.
Mason’s position is crucial in helping international students manage critical immigration processes such as Optional Practical Training (OPT), Curricular Practical Training (CPT), and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. “I see myself as both a problem-solver and a problem-preventer,” Mason explains, emphasizing his proactive approach to staying updated on evolving immigration laws. His goal is to ensure that students feel informed, confident, and at ease as they navigate complex immigration systems.
For Mason, the most rewarding aspect of his work is simplifying intricate immigration procedures. “It feels great to make these processes more accessible, helping students feel empowered in their journey,” he says. However, staying ahead of frequent regulatory changes is challenging. To stay well-informed, Mason attends webinars, conferences, and collaborates with colleagues nationwide. This constant learning helps him deliver the best possible support to MSU’s international student community.
Mason’s journey into international services was shaped by a passion for travel and cultural exchange. “My time as a student worker in the International Services office inspired me to pursue a graduate degree in International Affairs,” he reflects. This background allows him to provide practical guidance while fostering a spirit of global citizenship among students.
Through his work, Mason gains fresh perspectives daily from interacting with students representing nearly 100 countries. “I love the academic environment, where learning and cultural exchange thrive,” he adds.
Mason’s advice for international students is simple but crucial: “Talk to a DSO.” Students tend to get misinformation from random websites (or ChatGPT) or talk to their friends for advice. The reality is that each student often has a unique situation, and only their DSO can properly review their records and provide them with accurate and timely advice. DSOs are also here to support colleagues on campus like advisors and professors, as well as members of the greater community such as prospective employers and organizations. The government expects a DSO to be a primary resource on campus, so students and others should always rely on a DSO’s expertise. He also clarifies the distinction between the F-1 visa and the Form I-20—two important documents that students often confuse. “While the F-1 visa allows entry into the U.S., the Form I-20 must be maintained to stay in F-1 status,” he explains.
Mason’s work profoundly impacts MSU by ensuring international students can focus on their studies and professional goals without worrying about immigration issues. The International Services organizes workshops, events, and initiatives to support students’ academic and personal growth. “I’m proud of the progress we’ve made, including modernizing our processes and transitioning to a paperless office,” Mason says, highlighting how these efforts allow for more time to focus on direct student support.
Looking ahead, Mason is enthusiastic about enhancing the services offered by International Services. After the successful transition to a paperless office, he plans to refresh the university’s website and expand workshops to address more topics relevant to international students. “Our goal is to work smarter, not harder,” he explains, underscoring the importance of using technology to enhance both efficiency and effectiveness.
Outside of his work at MSU, Mason enjoys playing the piano, a lifelong passion. He also enjoys performing for family and friends, and he’s an avid fan of live music, from symphonies to musicals. In the warmer months, Mason takes advantage of the beautiful Ozarks landscape through activities like hiking, running, and kayaking.
Mason’s dedication to supporting international students goes far beyond his role as a problem-solver. His passion for cultural exchange, proactive approach to immigration support, and commitment to student success are making a lasting difference at MSU. As the university continues to grow, Mason’s work will remain an essential part of creating an inclusive, global educational environment.
