At Missouri State University (MSU), we are dedicated to fostering responsible global citizens—students who are not only academically driven, but also socially and environmentally conscious. The Office of Education Abroad leads initiatives to promote carbon-conscious travel practices, offering enriching international experiences while minimizing environmental impact.
The Stay Local Weekend Pledge: A Path to Sustainable Travel
Studying abroad offers incredible opportunities, but international travel—especially flights—contributes significantly to carbon emissions. To address this, the Office of Education Abroad has introduced the Stay Local Weekend Pledge. This initiative encourages students to stay local on designated weekends, avoiding carbon-intensive travel while allowing them to explore their host cities in greater depth.
Why Take the Stay Local Weekend Pledge?
- Support Climate Action: By participating, you’ll align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action, contributing to meaningful environmental change.
- Win a $100 Scholarship: Students who commit to staying local can earn a $100 scholarship by sharing photos or documenting their sustainable weekend activities.
- Engage with Your Host City: Staying local offers an opportunity to explore the culture and hidden gems of your host city—experiences that short trips simply can’t provide.
- Learn Sustainable Travel Practices: The pledge offers valuable lessons in eco-friendly travel, knowledge you can apply both abroad and at home.
Celebrating Our Sustainability Scholars
We’re proud of students like Trinity Norris, Madison Roland, and Alyssa Roney who have shared their sustainable travel experiences. In MSU’s Instagram takeover, biology student Norris commented on the land-dwelling wildlife she sees outside her dormitory in Tasmania, Australia: “Sometimes in the evenings if you get lucky there’s going to be kangaroos and wallabies.” When going shopping, she chose to walk to the stores. Roland created a short film documenting her weekend in London, England, including a visit to a local cafe, preparations for another film project, and her experience using public transportation. By taking part in the Stay Local Weekend Pledge, they have shown that every student has the power to make a difference and be a leader in sustainability.
Through their participation in the Stay Local Weekend Pledge, these students have demonstrated that every individual can make a difference and lead the way toward a more sustainable future.
Get Involved!
