The Cherry Blossom Kite and Piñata Festival, scheduled for April 5, 2025, at the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park in Springfield, Missouri, faced unexpected weather challenges this year. Due to rain and chilly temperatures, the Springfield Sister Cities Association made the decision to move the festivities indoors to the Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center.

Despite the change in venue, the festival maintained its vibrant celebration of Springfield’s sister city relationships with Isesaki, Japan, and Tlaquepaque, Mexico. Despite the venue change, the festival retained its joyful spirit. Attendees of all ages participated in cultural activities like building and decorating mini piñata poppers, while children took delight in swinging at brightly colored piñatas.

The festival featured live performances that showcased Japanese and Mexican cultures. Additionally, a few local food vendors were onsite offering Japanese and Mexican snacks, candies, beverages, and souvenirs, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the cultural experience. The Cherry Blossom Kite and Piñata Festival continues to be a cherished event in Springfield, bringing the community together to celebrate cultural diversity and the colors of spring, even when faced with unpredictable weather. If you were not able to attend this year, be sure to join and experience the celebration next spring!
