In Spring 2026, the International Leadership and Training Center welcomed future teachers from Japan for a lively three-week Education Major Immersion Program focused on U.S. education, English language development, and cross-cultural exchange.
Discovering U.S. Classrooms
Participants experienced American education firsthand through visits to local primary and secondary schools, including daily classroom observations at Greenwood Laboratory School. They observed classrooms, interacted with teachers and staff, and gained insight into everyday school life in the United States.
In addition to school visits, participants attended interactive seminars and Q&A sessions with education professionals. These experiences provided a deeper understanding of U.S. teaching styles, school systems, and classroom culture.

English Learning for Future Educators
The program also included Integrated English Skills workshops designed specifically for educators. Participants practiced reading, writing, listening, and speaking while building confidence in using English in academic and professional settings.
The workshops complemented the school visits and helped participants communicate more comfortably throughout the program.

Culture, Connection, and Collaboration
Beyond academics, the program encouraged cultural exchange and meaningful connections. Participants explored the local community, joined group activities, and built friendships with students and faculty.
One highlight was collaborating with Missouri State students enrolled in Instructor Hiromi’s Japanese courses. These interactions created engaging opportunities for students from both countries to share language and culture.
Another memorable experience was participation in the First Friday Art Walk, where program participants partnered with Missouri State students to introduce Japanese culture to the Springfield community through games, snacks, and interactive activities.
Wrapping Up with New Perspectives
By the end of the program, participants left with stronger English skills, new perspectives on teaching, and a deeper understanding of education across cultures. Most importantly, they formed meaningful relationships and gained experiences that will support their future careers as educators.
The Education Major Immersion Program continues to create opportunities for learning, connection, and cultural exchange while preparing future educators to engage in an increasingly global community.
