In Spring 2026, the International Leadership and Training Center hosted its first Sports Camp Program from Japan. Over three weeks, university-level international students took part in an immersive experience focused on U.S. college athletics, English language learning, and cultural exchange.
Exploring U.S. College Athletics Through Experience and Observation
Students gained firsthand exposure to U.S. collegiate sports through facility visits, training observations, live game attendance, and interactive sessions with sports professionals. Sports included soccer, basketball, track and field, baseball, tennis, gymnastics, and mixed martial arts. These experiences offered valuable insight into both collegiate and community athletics in the United States.
English Language Learning
Participants completed an Integrated English Skills course designed to strengthen reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities. Through discussions, presentations, and interactive activities, students built confidence in real-world communication.
Cultural Exchange and Connection
Cultural immersion was a key part of the program. Students engaged in local activities and connected with faculty, Missouri State University students, and athletic professionals. A highlight was participation in Springfield’s First Friday Art Walk, where Japanese students shared cultural games, food, and traditions with the local community alongside Mo State Japanese language students.
Completion
By the end of the program, students left with improved English skills, a deeper understanding of U.S. sports culture, and meaningful international friendships that will support their future academic and professional growth.
