Communications Assistant (Part-time) (Temporary)
Definition: Under close supervision of the Public Information Officer, performs communications tasks for the City of Nixa. The Communications Assistant (part-time) will work 16 hours per week for up to 12 weeks. Hours are flexible, subject to supervisor approval. This position will perform various tasks across a range of communications disciplines as an assistant to the Public Information Officer, along with one or more special projects. Will also perform a variety of clerical, secretarial, and administrative activities in support of the Public Information Officer.

Tasks and Duties may include but are not limited to:
• Writing/typing.
• Proof-reading.
• Still photography using a DSLR, smart phone, tablet, or other device.
• Learn about and interact with various city departments and partner organizations.
• Setting up appointments, meetings, and media interviews.
• Pitch story ideas to local media outlets and conduct other media relations activities under close supervision and direction of supervisor.
• Composing and typing of correspondence, reports, and memos.
• Collect and conduct analysis of data, using Excel spreadsheets.
• Create PowerPoint presentations.
• Provides information on City and individual department functions and refers visitors, callers, and others to the appropriate supervisor, department or agency.
• Greet and interact with staff and members of the public in a pleasant and congenial manner and serve them courteously.
• Must seek and receive feedback from supervisor and make appropriate edits to official publications including social media posts prior to release to the public view.
• Posting to the City’s official social media accounts as approved by supervisor.

• Operates city vehicle or personal vehicle for transportation to events and meetings.
• May be asked to work some weekend hours for special events.
• Perform other tasks and duties as assigned by supervision.
• Effectively perform as a member of the team in carrying out the City’s Mission Statement while embodying the internal staff mantra.
Qualifications:
• The ideal candidate is a current student in a public relations, journalism, photography, graphic design, or other communications-related or government administration related program of study at a college or university.
• Skill in oral and written communications.
• Deal effectively and courteously with associates and the general public.
• Basic understanding of photography. (skill in using a DSLR camera is a plus)
• Skill in using a variety of social media platforms and an understanding of appropriate use of social media for official communications.
• Experience and skill in any of the following is considered a plus: graphic design, digital photo editing, digital video production and non-linear editing, document layout and design, familiarity with Adobe Creative Cloud suite of software.
• Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
• Possess a valid State of Missouri driver’s license.
• Must be able to pass a background check.
Essential Functions: Extended use of computers, tablets, cameras, and other electronic equipment. Must be able to type 30 words per minute. Sight, hearing, speech, coordinated use of both arms, legs and hands at once, frequent lateral mobility, changing physical location, stooping, squatting, kneeling, twisting, climbing, bending, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; pushing and pulling 100 pounds, and lifting 50 pounds three feet above head. Holds and grips objects, subject to working in awkward positions and periods of prolonged standing. Reaching both to ground level and overhead. Some work indoors with heating and cooling regulated. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, dust and/or pollen. Exposed to constant and extreme noise, subject to other safety hazards associated with Police, Parks, and Public Works Departments. Mentally analyze a situation, solve problems and make decisions under pressure in area of responsibility.
