Assessment Update

January 31, 2024 by LeAnne Snow

Written by Andrea Applegate, MS, PA-C MSU PA Director of Assessment

The 2023 Alumni Survey was sent out in December to 441 email addresses collected from classes 2001-2022. 115 responded in the time frame, equating to a 26% response rate. The largest responders belonged to the classes 2019-2022 (46% of respondents). All but three respondents were working as a PA at the time of the survey, with personal choice being the most cited reason for not continuing in practice. Most were working in clinical practice full-time (83%) in a hospital or office-based practice (66%). While most respondents were still practicing in Missouri, alumni report practicing in 23 other states. Many of the alumni are working in medically underserved areas, Federally Qualified Health Centers, and Health Provider Shortage Areas (44%).

Alumni are mainly working in internal medicine (18%) or surgical (20%), or emergency medicine (20%) specialties, followed closely by family practice (14%). A large majority (95%) of alumni are satisfied with their decision to become a PA, although 88% of respondents did admit to experiencing some level of career burnout. Over 97% of alumni felt prepared for their first 1-3 years of practice when reflecting on their didactic and their clinical education, and no one indicated that they would not recommend MSU PA Program to others. Many of the responses to “improving curriculum to better preparing MSU graduates for clinical practice” have been changes that the program has made in recent years as they are areas identified every alumni survey. These include pharmacology, billing/coding, and clinical site opportunities.

The average salary was $128,300, with the higher salaries being reported in surgical specialties. The majority of respondents received fringe benefits including health, life, and malpractice insurance as well as CME Reimbursement. All alumni reported they were NCCPA certified and 66% reported they were a member of a PA professional organization. Many of the alumni respondents are involved in community service (49%) and are involved in teaching activities (40%), Greater than 90% of respondents agreed that they work in a healthcare team and promote health-enhancing behaviors.

The MSU PA Alumni Survey reports every two years and the next survey will go out in 2025. We look forward to hearing from our previous students and look for ways to update our program.

Department & Program News

January 31, 2024 by LeAnne Snow

Written by Roberto Canales, DHSc, MS, PA-C MSU PA Department Head/Program Director

We began fall 2023 with much to tackle. There was a new class to select, prepare for summative testing of clinical students as they neared graduation, and prepare to transition didactic students to the clinical year of training. How did we fare?  We selected the largest incoming class of 34 to begin their PA training January 2024. All 31 clinical students successfully completed the fall semester and are working on the next step of their PA careers, and we managed to successfully fill all 34 available seats for the Class of 2025.

While there were no faculty or staff changes to report this past fall semester, we did have an addition to the PAS program family. Andrea Applegate gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Drayden Applegate Butcher. Both mom and dad could not be prouder of him and love teaching and taking pictures of him.

On a more personal note. After 30 years in PA education, 22 of those at MSU, I announced my intent to retire at the end of August. However, before I retire, I will step down as the program director at the end of June. I am stepping down before retirement on purpose so that I can work with the new PD to help ensure a smooth transition for the program. The university will soon start a search so be on the lookout for updates about this on the program’s Facebook site.

Class of 2024 Student Spotlight: Harlee Kelley

December 20, 2023 by LeAnne Snow

The Missouri State University Physician Assistant Studies Department is pleased to spotlight Class of 2024 student Harlee Kelley. Harlee serves as the Class of 2024 Student Academy Representative on the American Academy of PAs Assembly of Representatives. After successfully navigating the challenging first year of PA education, Harlee is eager to gain hands-on experience with community health care partners in the clinical phase of education beginning January 2024.

Read our interview with Harlee to find out more about her journey through the first year of PA education, and her best advice for new PA students.

Hometown: Lee’s Summit, MO

Degree: MSU BS in Microbiology/Biotechnology, minor in General Business

Previous health care experience: floating MA at mercy cross trained as an NA in the CVICU, scribe at CoxHealth family med and ED, MA at Kanarek Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology

Interesting Fact:

I am scuba certified and would love to dive the great barrier reef someday.

Why did you decide to become a PA?

I knew I wanted to be a medical provider because I love the fast paced, challenging field of medicine. I decided to go the PA route because I love that our profession gives us flexibility and a good work-life balance while still maintaining autonomy as a provider.

Describe your experience so far in the program. What are you looking forward to next year?

So far in the program, it has been super challenging, but also one of the best times in my life. I am so amazed by the amount of information I’ve learned and how much closer I am to becoming a PA. I also have met the best people in the world through this program, and I can’t imagine life without them. Not only has this program given me an amazing education, but it gave me my best friends in the process. Next year I am nervous but so excited to see and treat real patients. It will be the perfect opportunity to take the knowledge I’ve gained this year and apply it to real life scenarios where I can make a big difference in people’s lives.

What do you like best about Missouri State’s PA program?

What I love most about this program is how close the students and professors are. I feel so comfortable coming and talking to any of the professors in our program and I truly feel like these will be lifelong professional relationships, which I have never experienced with any other college-level professors. I feel like these relationships we have been able to build create such a great environment to learn and ask questions and are an important part of the program’s success.

Do you have any advice for prospective PA students? Any helpful tips to prepare for PA education?

My advice to future students would be to find your people and stick with them! It is impossible to get through didactic year without people that love you and understand what you’re going through. Having the support of my friends throughout this process has been one of the most important things for me. Everyone has their down days as PA education is extremely difficult, but having amazing friends to pull you back up is an invaluable resource to help get you through.

What specialty or career goals do you want to pursue?

Right now, I am going into clinical year open to try and find a specialty I love. I don’t have my heart set on any specific specialty, but I have an interest in emergency medicine, plastic surgery, oncology, and general surgery. I hope next year will help me solidify what I do and don’t like, so I can find the perfect specialty for me!

Class of 2023 Student Spotlight: Zane Tranmer

December 20, 2023 by LeAnne Snow

Zane Tranmer is a new graduate of the MSU PA program. On Friday, December 15, he received a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies at Missouri State University with the Class of 2023. Classmates describe him as “adventurous, kind, bright, confident, genuine, and a jokester.” Preceptors shared, “Zane wowed me from day 1 with his medical knowledge and presentation skills. He was a joy to have in the office and I would eagerly hire him.” “Zane is easily in my top 10% of students that I have precepted including medical students, PAs and NPs throughout my career.”

Read our interview with Zane to find out more about his journey to PA education, his experience in the program, and advice to prospective students.

Hometown: Strafford Mo

Degree: Missouri State University major-Biology, minor-Chemistry

Previous Healthcare experience:

Psychiatric Technician: Entry level position in which I worked hands on with patients admitted to an inpatient psychiatric service. I monitored behaviors and intervened when necessary as well as designed and implemented therapeutic programming for the patients.

Interesting Fact: I am an avid sit-com lover and am happy to quote with anyone.

Why did I decide to become a PA?

I decided to be a PA because I care deeply about expanding access to healthcare and I believe that the Physician Assistant is the perfect role to do that quickly and effectively.

Describe your experience so far in the program.

PA school has been a wild, difficult, amazing ride. Throughout the last two years I have learned more than I thought possible and grown close to strangers I now think of as family. PA school is structured to challenge us, to bring out the best in us, to find our limits, and I experienced that firsthand. My favorite part has been learning the nuances of medicine from many different providers and melding them into my own unique practice.

Most recent clinical rotation: I just completed my elective rotation in Sports Medicine.

What do you like best about Missouri State’s PA program?

The best part of MSU PA is the tried-and-true process that the faculty has implemented for our education. We are often told to “Trust the process,” a phrase I did not initially understand, but, with the finish line in sight, I can see that “the process” is built to transform us into great providers.

Do you have any advice for prospective PA students? Any helpful tips to prepare for PA education?

Know why you want to go into medicine before getting into PA school. Interests may change throughout your education, but your motivation needs to be steadfast as it will be tested at various points in the program.

What specialty or career goals do you want to pursue?

I don’t yet know what specialty I want to go into. I came into school convinced I wanted to do surgery but fell in love with family practice. I loved the long-term connections and the complexity of the cases seen in family practice. I may specialize later in my career, but I want to continue to work on my general knowledge for a while first.
