Unfolding the Map, work by Sharon Harper
July 5 – August 4

Part of the ongoing emeritus series, Unfolding the Map features work in painting, drawing, ceramics, and crochet that use visual metaphors and self-portraits to create a personal narrative of Harper’s own life experiences.

“My process of working has not changed much over the years: I respond to my current thoughts, surroundings, and materials to find my way. Not sure of what will come next, my map unfolds as the journey continues.”

Unfolding the Map was featured in SECAC’s 2023 Online Exhibition Reviews.

The Figure, Reclaimed
A Renaissance of the body in visual culture, co-curated by Jodi McCoy and Mara Cressey
July 5 – August 4

The Figure, Reclaimed, seeks to celebrate and explore the Renaissance of the female body and the female figurative painter in visual culture. Through the work of Aneka Ingold and Livia Xandersmith, this exhibition explores how female figurative painters have combined the traditional art of figurative painting with contemporary, stylized approaches to redefine and expand upon what it means to be a figurative painter, ruminate on the female experience, and how representations of the female body are consumed.

The Figure, Reclaimed was a featured CAA Committee on Women in the Arts Summer Pick and also reviewed by Greta Cross for the Springfield News-leader.

Make to Know
November 28 – December 9

Throughout the course of this semester, graduate students in the Art & Design Department have been reading Lorne Buchman’s Make to Know: From Spaces of Uncertainty to Creative Discovery for their interdisciplinary graduate seminary class. This book explains the idea of “make to know” as learning by doing, in which artistic discovery occurs through the process of making and exploration.

Using this book as a starting point, the students have had meaningful discussions centered around planned spontaneity, creative entry points, and how processes, materials, and concepts can guide the making process.

As a result, they have brought new approaches into their studios to guide them through their making process throughout the semester. Make to Know is a visual display of the results of those explorations, in progress and in their final forms.

Socially Distanced, co-curated by Graduate Assistants Shauna Le Ann Smith and Nadia Issa
May 24-June 24, 2021

The term “social distance” is incredibly prevalent in our current day-to-day, and has a long, complicated history. In the nineteenth century, “social distance” was a euphemism used by the British to talk about class and by Americans to talk about race. In today’s time, it most commonly refers to the six feet distance that must be maintained to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The aim of this exhibition is to refer, criticize, interpret, or reinterpret “socially distanced”. Exhibiting artists addressed the theme of “socially distanced” in a multitude of explorative ways.

Featuring work from Catherine Reinhart and Giovanni Valderas, this exhibition showcases social practice-based works of art that document the detritus of cultural domesticity and neighborhoods. Each artist uses interdisciplinary practices to raise awareness about their locale, from the intimate scale of caregiving within a home to community-wide housing issues.
