Dr. James Kaatz developed a unique Study Away opportunity entitled “Local Governance in the Chicago Metropolitan Area” This program was designed to give students a background in government operations in Chicago and its suburbs. The main focus was gaining an understanding of government operations, best practices, local politics, and quality of life for citizens in the third largest metropolitan area in the United States.
Here are some of the highlights.
The Plainfield Water Division processes 4000 gallons per minute from Lake Michigan. The students also had a chance to interact with Plainfield, ILMayor and Manager after council meeting.
The wastewater treatment plant in Waukegan, IL. Can process 25 million gallons a day
Chicago City Council City chambers where students met the City Clerk and Sergeant at Arms. I’m sure it’s just a trick of the light, but it looks like Hizzoner is still keeping an eye on things.
Salmon were introduced in Lake Michigan in the 1960s to control the invasive alewives. The growing salmon population has spawned a growing tourist industry.
