For Missouri State University faculty and staff, the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class being held at MSU is now available through My Learning Connection.
The class is intended to allow folks to help themselves and their neighbors during a large-scale disaster when public safety assistance may be delayed. After completing CERT basic training, you’ll have the option to register with the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) as an official CERT volunteer. As a registered member, your name will be added to a pool of core volunteers the OEM may call upon for assistance in a variety of roles during disasters (ice storms, tornadoes, floods, etc.) or pre-planned events (fairs, parades, concerts, etc.). You will also be eligible for enhanced training in a variety of disaster preparedness & response courses we offer only to registered volunteers.
The CERT class provides basic disaster preparedness and response training to the public. A typical CERT class includes 21 hours of training covering:
• Disaster Preparedness
• The National Incident Management System (NIMS)
• Basic Medical Care
• Small-Fire Suppression
• Light Search & Rescue Techniques
• Disaster Psychology
• Terrorism Awareness and CERT Animal Response Team orientation
• CERT Organization
The class concludes with a practical exercise in which you’ll respond to a simulated disaster to practice skills learned in the classroom.
There is a $25 fee to offset costs from items used during the class. The class runs Wednesday evenings 10/17-12/5/18 from 6:00-9:30 in Strong Hall Room 003.
