Political Science alumna, Haley Tarvin, is a student emissary at UMKC Law.
I chose to go to law school knowing that I wanted to help people who deserve a second chance. I was comforted at UMKC Law when I learned almost immediately after applying that there were people in my corner there who wanted to see me work toward that goal and to see me succeed in it.
After an exciting (and admittedly exhausting) 1L year, I participated in the study abroad program in Ireland and Wales where I got to learn about criminal law in Ireland and the UK and the European Union. Following the program and with the help of UMKC faculty, I was given the opportunity to intern with the Court of Criminal Appeal in Dublin, Ireland and experience the inner-workings of their court system.
I’ve had a great summer meeting new people and experiencing a new culture and am looking forward to getting back to Kansas City to intern at the Public Defender’s Office this year.
My advice to anyone who is considering law school would be to find a school that cares about helping you achieve your goals, and once you’re there to never stop working hard to achieve them, but also to not forget that you’re more than just a student and make time for yourself as well.
