Currently, I am a 2L at the University of Oregon School of Law. I plan on going into either criminal law or family law. I graduated from Missouri State University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Professional Writing with a minor in Public Law.
Why the University of Oregon
During my senior year at Missouri State, I set a wide range for the law school I wanted to attend. After being accepted, I visited the University of Oregon. My visit solidified my interest in moving somewhere with mild weather, but I also learned more about its top-ranked legal writing program. Because of my degree in Professional Writing, a great writing program was something at the top of my list. While moving across the country was hard at times, I really enjoy Oregon and recommend moving for law school to a location you want to spend time in.
Law School Search Advice
When looking for a law school, look into programs that have great programs for writing, as those skills set you up for your future. Also, find a school that offers many avenues for gaining experience. For me, it took a summer working in family law to know that I was even interested in the field. For anyone interested in law school with no idea what they want to do afterword: find a school that gives you great opportunities inside and outside of the classroom.
Missouri State Advice
Even though I was not a Political Science major, I spent a lot of time in the department for my Public Law minor. The resources through the department were great in preparing me for my first year, particularly Dr. Pybas’ Constitutional Law courses. I recommend taking those classes if you are interested in going to law school, as they prepared me quite well for my first year. Learning how to read cases and respond well when called on can only help you during your first year.
Take advantage of everything Missouri State has to offer. The advisors and professors I had there helped me through the law school application process, which I am still grateful for. The classes I took prepared me for the realities of law school. Overall, I was well-prepared for law school because of my time at Missouri State.
