The Campus and Community Climate Study Report was released on March 16, 2015. I summarized the highlights from the report in a prior Clif’s Note.
I am pleased to inform you that this fall we will be moving forward with a number of important responses to the climate study.
University moves forward in addressing Climate Study report
We will host Dr. Edward E. Hubbard and Dr. Myra K. Hubbard to make three presentations on campus on Sept. 15-16. The first presentation is open to the public as part of Missouri State’s Public Affairs Week. This presentation is titled Bridging the Diversity Gap by Building Healthy Communities and a Rich Campus Life, and it will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on September 15 in the Plaster Student Union Theater. The second and third presentations will be diversity training workshops for University and community leadership, titled The ROI Business Case for Diversity: Enhancing Business Performance and ROI Impact. Please plan to attend the public presentation on September 15.
Public affairs convocation features The Other Wes Moore
Wes Moore will be giving the Public Affairs Convocation on campus at 7 p.m. on Oct. 20 in JQH Arena. Mr. Moore overcame academic and behavioral struggles early in life to graduate with honors, become a Rhodes Scholar and serve in the United States Army. He currently helps young people succeed by making the right choices through education and awareness alongside the support of their parents, teachers and mentors. Mr. Moore will discuss his book—and this year’s Common Reader—“The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates”. Please join us for what I know will be a memorable presentation.
Faculty, student work groups will review issues
We have also formed several work groups to evaluate the recommendations in the climate study report and ensure that the University implements appropriate initiatives and action plans in response to the climate study.
Dr. Sharmista Self, chair of the Faculty Senate, has formed an ad hoc Committee on the Climate Study and charged it to evaluate the recommendations of the climate study that fall under the purview of faculty, suggest related curriculum improvements and develop ideas for increasing faculty diversity.
Ashley Crisafulli, president of the Student Government Association (SGA), has asked SGA’s director of diversity and inclusion to work with the Diversity and Inclusion Committee to create a student diversity action plan in response to the climate study. This year SGA will reach out to underrepresented student organizations in an effort to make SGA more representative of the student body demographics.
University task force will lead efforts
To coordinate the work of the Faculty Senate and SGA committees, and to ensure that we have a comprehensive action plan that addresses all University stakeholders, I have formed a Climate Study Response Task Force and asked Dr. Kenneth Coopwood, vice president for diversity and inclusion, to serve as chair. This task force has been charged to:
- Analyze the data, findings, and recommendations set forth in the Climate Study Climate Study Executive Summary.
- Collaborate with other University committees, task forces, and work groups that are developing recommendations and responses to the Climate Study Project, including but not limited to the Faculty Senate and Student Government Association committees.
- Collaborate with the University’s 2016-2021 Long Range Plan Steering Committee to provide input, recommendations, and suggestions for the diversity section of the University’s forthcoming long range plan.
- Recommend particular action items to include in the diversity section of the University’s goals for 2016-2017 and monitor progress toward achieving such action items.
I hope you will join me in making the most of every opportunity to continue to enhance our campus climate at the University and in the Springfield community.
Thanks for all you do for Missouri State!
