Partnerships with community colleges and other two-year institutions are critical to our work at Missouri State.
During 2018, Missouri State enrolled 2,268 new transfer students. They accounted for more than 40 percent of all new undergraduates, and about 70 percent were from community colleges. Additionally, about half of our entering freshmen had credit for courses taken while in high school, and many of those students earned their credit from community colleges.
We work hard — perhaps harder than anyone else in the state — on making Missouri State University a transfer destination for students. Our efforts have been successful. We lead the state in transfer enrollment.
Examples of our efforts to bolster partnerships with two-year institutions include:
- The chancellor of the West Plains campus is part of my administrative council, and we work to facilitate relationships between administrative and academic counterparts at the Springfield and West Plains campuses.
- We have several joint administrative and academic leadership meetings with Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) each year to discuss the status of existing articulations and to develop ideas for opportunities to articulate new educational pathways.
- We recently partnered with OTC to submit a grant application for a nursing expansion in the Ozarks region. That grant application has been accepted by the Missouri Department of Higher Education, and, if appropriated, will provide $3.2 million to expand McQueary Family Health Sciences Hall.
Strengthening these relationships
As we work on enrollment, these relationships will continue to be important for the future of Missouri State.
This week I will be joined by administrative and academic leaders in two meetings with community college partners. On Wednesday, we will meet with administrators from Crowder College to discuss our existing articulations and to discuss opportunities to further develop transfer pathways. On Friday, we will travel to St. Louis to meet with administrators from St. Louis Community College to have similar conversations.
Each of us should work to make the transfer process smooth and the student experience positive for our transfer students and our two-year partners. Through these relationships, we will continue to set Missouri State apart as the transfer destination in the state of Missouri.
Thanks for all you do for Missouri State!
