We received over 300 questions at the town hall meeting earlier this month. Those questions have been categorized and reviewed by Administrative Council. In the coming weeks, Frank and I will attempt to address many of these questions in Clif’s Notes and the Provost Communique.
Extending use of accumulated vacation
After the town hall meeting, human resources received questions about the university’s policy on accumulating vacation leave. Under existing policy, employees who have accumulated more than two years of vacation leave would lose some of their leave at the end of this month. The pandemic has made it more difficult than usual for some employees to use their vacation leave.
Last week we adopted a temporary policy that extends the June 30, 2020 deadline to June 30, 2021 for using accumulated vacation leave. This gives employees an extra year to use their accumulated vacation leave without losing it.
Re-opening buildings, returning athletes
Last week we also made two important decisions about re-opening campus.
We developed and began implementing a building re-opening plan. This plan results from hundreds of communications with departments and offices throughout campus.
Even though a building may be open, particular offices in the building may still be closed. Employees should continue to communicate with their supervisors about whether and when they should report to campus.
The university also adopted an Athletics Re-entry Policy. This policy will allow our student athletes to return to campus for training throughout the summer. The policy includes multiple layers of precautions that will be taken to protect the safety of our students and employees.
No retirement incentive
At the town hall we received many questions about the possibility of a retirement incentive.
Over the last two months, a work group evaluated many options for retirement incentives. Administrative Council reviewed and discussed the options presented by the work group.
We have decided not to issue a retirement incentive. I do not expect that decision to change for the foreseeable future.
Evaluating mask and furlough procedures
The bulk of the questions received during the town hall dealt with the university’s fall mask policy and furloughs. Following the town hall we formed work groups on these two issues.
Those groups will evaluate options and develop policies for my approval. These policies will answer many of the questions presented about masks and furloughs. I will let you know when those policies are finalized.
Thanks for all you do for Missouri State!
