Dr. Ken Bain to Provide Keynote at the 28th Showcase on Teaching and Learning Luncheon
Date: Wednesday, August 14
Times: 8:00 a.m. Breakfast and Networking; 9:00 a.m. Faculty Presentations; 12:00 Lunch and Keynote Speaker
Location: PSU Ballroom and 3rd Floor conference rooms
Dr. Ken Bain, best-selling author of “What the Best College Teachers Do” (2004) and “What the Best College Students Do” (2012) will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Showcase on Teaching and Learning. Dr. Bain will lead us in a conversation to contrast traditional views of learning with deep learning.
We will address questions such as:
- How can we encourage sufficient levels of motivation and diligence in students who often struggle academically?
- How can we help high-achieving students aspire to deep learning rather than simply receiving good grades?
- How can we encourage strong problem solving and high degrees of creativity and compassion, attributes that are central to our public affairs mission?
A lunch buffet will be provided including a vegetarian entrée. Plan to join us for good food and good conversation with Dr. Bain on student learning at MSU.
The complete Showcase schedule and session descriptions can be viewed at the 28th Showcase on Teaching and Learning website.
To register for the conference, go to My Learning Connection, click on Course Catalog and select Show All Classes; under Choose Category, highlight “Showcase on Teaching & Learning.” Next you will select “Conference Registration” to attend the morning Faculty presentations, and “Luncheon Registration” to attend the lunch and Keynote presentation. Once selected click on Add to Cart; then Check Out and Finalize.
If you have difficulty in registering, please contact the FCTL at 417-836-3059.
We look forward to seeing you at the 28th Showcase on Teaching and Learning!

Submit Summer Assignments for the Quality Initiative Project (QIP)
The Quality Initiative Project (QIP) is a non-intrusive system for assessing (not grading) student work related to the public affairs mission. By collecting student work across all disciplines, course levels, and both curricular and co-curricular units, this project will provide campus constituents with a sense of our students’ understanding and integration of the public affairs mission themes and our diversity goals.
The QIP process is simple:
- Identify assignments or events related to the public affairs mission.
- Collect student work as usual.
- Office of Assessment staff will pick up the student work then copy and return it within 2-3 business days.
- The Office of Assessment will remove all identifying information from the student work and prepare it for review.
How is the student work used?
- Faculty and staff reviewers use the QIP scoring rubric to evaluate student work at different points throughout the year.
- Office of Assessment staff report aggregate data to the Assessment Council then Faculty Senate.
- Faculty Senate makes recommendations to improve public affairs integration in curricular and co-curricular programs if needed and shares recommendations with campus.
As a token of our appreciation, everyone who submits student work will receive a Starbucks gift card and a certificate of participation that can be included in a promotion and tenure dossier or ADP.
If you wish to submit student work, complete the online Intent to Participate Form.
If you would like to be a QIP reviewer, fill out the online application.
If you have any questions or would like additional information, contact the Office of Assessment at assessment@missouristate.edu or 417-836-6300, or visit the QIP page on our website.
