Provost Series for Faculty Development
Managing Disruptive Student Behavior
Dates: Monday and Thursday, February 24 and 27
Time: 3:30–5:00 p.m.
Location: Carrington Hall 203
A disturbing journal submission, odd contributions in discussion, repetitive and distracting behaviors, verbal outbursts, etc. How do you manage a classroom when a student has behavioral issues? How do you differentiate a student who is simply “odd” from one who is potentially dangerous? Under what conditions might a student be removed from class under the university’s Classroom Disruption Policy? This workshop will focus on strategies for addressing student behavior and using the university’s policies to support your educational environment.

Hollywood Editor and MSU Alumnus to Visit Campus
Master Class: Friday, February 7, 12–1 p.m., PSU Theater
Film Screening: Friday, February 7, 7–9 p.m., PSU Theater
Byron Smith (Media Production, 1999) will be back in town to do a master class in editing. He will dissect a scene from the TV Series, Big Love, which Byron edited for four years. He’ll talk about his working relationship as an editor with great directors like David Fincher and Ryan Murphy as well as the way an editor assembles, crafts, and creates effective cinematic stories.
That evening, from 7–9 p.m. in the PSU Theater, Byron will screen an episode of House of Cards, which he edited in season one of this Netflix series, and hold a talk back session following the screening. Season two of House of Cards starts February 14, so we may get a little insight into what’s coming this year from Kevin Spacey’s portrayal of a corrupt Washington Congressman.
Both events are free and open to the public.
Family Group Conference Training
Date: Saturday and Sunday, February 8–9
Time: 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Location: Park Central Office Building, Room 209
Make a lasting difference for children and families in our community by volunteering as a Family Group Conference (FGC) Facilitator. This FREE training will prepare you to facilitate family group conferences for children with a parent in recovery. These family group conferences are offered by the Center for Dispute Resolution (CDR) as part of Alternative Opportunities Inc.’s Regional Partnership Grant program, which provides treatment, education, support, and other services for families in recovery.
Family group conferences bring a family together with their relatives, friends, and other supportive people in their lives to develop a plan to support the parent in recovery and ensure the safety and well-being of the children involved. Those with an interest in helping children and families are encouraged to sign up for the CDR’s 2-day Family Group Conference Training, which will cover the history, philosophy, and theory of FGC, family dynamics, the FGC model, and FGC facilitation skills and practice. Completion of a background check is required for all program volunteers. The training is FREE for those who make a 1-year commitment to volunteer with the program (approximately one case/month).
Noncredit Offerings for Spring 2014
GO LEAD: Nuts and Bolts of Nonprofit Management–Board Development
Date: Thursday, February 13
Time: 8 a.m.–Noon
Location: Kentwood Crystal Ballroom
Cost: $39
Participants will explore board development and volunteer management, to include, recruitment and retention, working with a nonprofit board, board composition, volunteer management, volunteer performance appraisals, volunteer recognition and commendation and setting limits with volunteers.

GO LEAD: Nonprofit Leadership in the 21st Century–Governance & Management
Date: Thursday, February 13
Time: 12:30 p.m.–4:30 p.m.
Location: Kentwood Crystal Ballroom
Cost: $39
Participants will explore the working relationship between nonprofit executives and their boards. Participants will also explore techniques for effective management of staff and engaging board members to play an active role in the organization’s fundraising and development activities. Participants will also be introduced to human resources best practices, to include, personnel policy and job descriptions, government regulation, hiring practices, roles and responsibilities for volunteers and staff, professional development, performance appraisals, record keeping and exempt and non-exempt status.

Advanced Grant Writing
Date: Friday, February 21

Location: Meyer Alumni Center, 2nd Floor
Cost: $125
The advanced grant writing workshop is perfectly suited for those that have a basic understanding of the grant writing process and format. The workshop will cover establishing a grant strategy for an organization or project, cover in depth various federal grant writing concepts and strategies, and discuss advanced program development and evaluation techniques. Participants are encouraged to bring a copy of a proposal constructed to obtain feedback from the speaker as well as others in the course.

Making Social Media Work for Your Nonprofit

Developing Student Assessments for the Online Environment
Dates and Times: Tuesday, February 11 from 9:30–10:30 a.m.; Wednesday, February 12 from 3:00–4:00 p.m.
Location: Meyer Library Room 204 (both days)
This workshop is designed to facilitate a thoughtful review of the current learning objectives in your online course, and the development and selection of assessment strategies. This process is one of the very first steps in effective instructional design and will provide a clearer understanding of what topics and competencies to cover, as well as their sequence. How Can I Make My Course Content More Accessible?
Date: Thursday, February 20

This workshop is designed for faculty who are new to the subject of accessibility and making accommodations. The session combines a conceptual approach with real-world tested practical advice. Faculty will enhance awareness of the drawbacks inherent in the most common ways of presenting course content and learn specific techniques for making material more accessible. Smartwatches on Campus
The Academic Integrity Council would like to alert faculty to the presence of “Smartwatches” on the MSU campus. These watches can receive emails and text messages which can be viewed during tests without even touching the watch. The watch face can appear like a traditional watch one moment and the next have test answers visible to the wearer. Below is a link to an informational article with pictures and details of some of the most popular models available.
Blackboard Feature Spotlight: Group Management
Groups are a great way to increase engagement and communication amongst students in your Blackboard course. New features in Blackboard make it extremely easy to create, interact with, and manage groups. If you’d like to start utilizing this feature, get started with this page in Experts. Computer Services also offers classes on Groups and Group Management titled “Creating Individualized and Group Learning Paths” that you can register for though My Learning Connection. If you need assistance setting up or working with groups, feel free to call the Computer Services Help Desk at 6-5891 or visit one of our “Ask the Experts” sessions any Friday between 1:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in Meyer Library 205.
