Development of Nanomaterials for Applications in Energy Technology
Date: Tuesday, March 4
Time: 7:30–8:30 p.m.
Location: Temple Hall 002
Speaker: Kartik Ghosh, Professor, Department of Physics, Astronomy and Materials Science
In the 21st century one of the major problems the world faces is the scarcity of available energy resources, mainly in the form of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy sources and not environmentally friendly. Hence, finding renewable energy is an alternative solution to this global issue. Renewable energies appear in many commonly known forms such as solar, wind, and running water, and among them solar and hydro thermal energy show the greatest potential.
New concepts for solar and photo-catalytic cells with improved efficiency will require novel nanostructured photo-active semiconducting materials. Currently, we are developing high photo-active nanostructures of metal oxide-based materials, like zinc oxide and copper oxide. Our research activities address basic issues on growth and characterization of nanostructures and fabrication of devices using these nanomaterials. In this presentation, I will discuss how nanostructured materials are important in applications to energy technology, in particular to solar energy. I will also share some of our recent results on oxide-based nanostructures that can be used for future solar cell technology.

Boots to Books: Advising and Teaching Veterans
Date: Friday, March 7

Location: Plaster Student Union Ballroom East
Facilitator: Jenifer Kautzman
The Department of Veterans Affairs indicates that enrollment of veterans in college has increased 16-fold and well over 500,000 veterans have traded in their uniforms for text books. With the development of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, and the wars in Iraq/Afghanistan coming to an end, colleges across the state are seeing dramatic increases of veterans attending classes. At Missouri State University we’ve developed the Veteran Student Services office to meet the growing demands of this exceptional group of students. In this session, learn about unique needs of student-veterans, discuss ways we can engage, encourage and empower our student-veterans and hear from current student-veterans about their personal transition and experiences.
After the workshop, participants will have an opportunity to tour the Veteran Student Services office and student lounge.
Space is limited and registration is required through the academic advisement website. Please contact Kathy Davis at ext. 65258 with questions.

Blackboard Feature Spotlight: The Blackboard Home Page
When you first log into Blackboard do you pay much attention to the landing page, or do you just go straight to a particular class?
Your home page might be able to work more efficiently for you. You can customize the color and the modules the page contains all very simply. Spend some time playing with the Personalize and Add Module pages to see what is available. There are only a few of the twenty-seven modules initially available on your home page, and even those can be customized. For instance, if your My Courses module is populated with courses from previous semesters or those that you don’t need, you can change it. Just click the “S” that appears in the upper right hand corner of the module when your mouse hovers over it.
From there you can choose each individual course you would like to see and what information about that course you want to know! (Click on image for larger version.)
Take a few minutes today to make your Blackboard home page work better for you!
For more information about the My Missouri State Blackboard landing page check out the page in Experts. Or, you can see the Blackboard Blog to learn more about some of the great features in Blackboard. Don’t forget about all the opportunities for Blackboard training at the Blackboard at Missouri State University website, and learn how you can become a Blackboard Black Belt while you’re there!
