Training the Next Olympians
In the health and athletics world, the word train means to practice in order to improve. But in the world of Special Olympics athletes, it means so much more, thanks to a group of students and faculty from Missouri State University. This interdisciplinary group from kinesiology, special education, dietetics, graphic design and computer science developed TRAIN, Testing Recreation Activities and Improving Nutrition, in 2009 and 2010. You can learn more about the research done by TRAIN on the Mind’s Eye website.
The purpose of Mind’s Eye is to highlight research and scholarly activities at Missouri State University. This publication is available online and in print. This research project, along with many others, can be found on the Mind’s Eye website.
Spotlight on Student Success
Student Success is a primary goal of Missouri State University and particularly the Student Development and Public Affairs office. The SDPA will be providing a series of spotlights in the coming weeks, highlighting Student Success programs in the colleges and departments across campus. Blackboard Feature Spotlight: Inline Grading
Inline Grading is the feature that allows you to view, annotate, and grade students’ submissions in Blackboard. This useful addition makes grading a breeze! Along with Assignments, you’re also able to use the Inline Grading feature with Blogs, Journals, Wiki’s and more! If you’re ready to start using Inline Grading, head over to this page in Experts. Computer Services offers many classes on all of the great features in Blackboard, so if you’d like to receive some in-person training on inline grading and a whole host of other features, search for classes sponsored by Computer Services Training & Documentation in My Learning Connection. Thinking of Leading a Short-term Study Away Program?
If you’re thinking of leading a short-term study away program, please consider attending two events this month. The Study Away Fair will be held on Wednesday, September 10 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the PSU Atrium. Meet program providers and fellow faculty members who are leading short-term programs. Discuss your ideas and review the proposal process with Study Away Director Elizabeth Strong. Please encourage your students to attend as well.
The Study Away Fall Faculty Luncheon will be held on Wednesday, September 17 from Noon to 1:30 p.m. in PSU 308. Join experienced Study Away faculty directors to learn about developing one- to eight-week programs. Topics include logistics and budgeting, collaborating with other institutions, research opportunities, enriching academic content, and more. The event is free, but seating is limited. RSVP by Friday, September 12 to Study Away at 836-6368.
Provost Fellow for Public Affairs: Dr. Elizabeth Dudash-Buskirk
The Office of the Provost is pleased to announce that Dr. Elizabeth Dudash-Buskirk, Associate Professor of Socio-Political Communication and Rhetoric, Department of Communication, has been selected as the Provost Fellow for Public Affairs for 2015–2016. As Provost Fellow for Public Affairs, Dr. Dudash-Buskirk will be responsible for the Public Affairs Conference in April 2016 and promoting the Public Affairs mission of the University. The topic for the 2016 Conference will be the university-wide Public Affairs theme “Building Healthy Communities: Body, Mind and Spirit.” Dr. Dudash-Buskirk will shadow this year’s Provost Fellow for Public Affairs, Dr. Kurt Heinlein, in preparation for the work she will do in preparing for the 2016 Public Affairs Conference.
According to Dr. Dudash-Buskirk, “Building healthy communities is not about the health of individuals in body, mind, and spirit, but about the process of building communities in a healthy way. The Public Affairs theme for 2015–2016 is an invitation for people from all perspectives—biological, psychological, sociological, political, environmental, religious, and so on—to talk about building healthier communities. The focus on health of the body, mind, and spirit as a theme is important, but the emphasis on the process of building healthy communities is something that we can all engage in no matter our background, interest or career practice.”
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Elizabeth Dudash-Buskirk as the 2015–2016 Provost Fellow for Public Affairs as we explore the theme of “Building Healthy Communities: Body, Mind and Spirit.”
Stomp Out Hunger Shoe Drive
This October 1–25, Missouri State University, along with Drury University, Evangel University, Ozarks Technical College, and Southwest Baptist University, will once again join together for a cooperative community service project. This project, Stomp Out Hunger: All-Collegiate Shoe Drive, embodies the MSU public affairs mission as well as the 2014–15 public affairs theme, The Ethical Citizen: can you make a difference? This shoe drive is for students, faculty and staff—the whole MSU community. Learn more by visiting the Stomp Out Hunger website.

Monthly faculty writing retreats provide dedicated time and space to work on academic writing. Retreats include breakfast and a light lunch, opportunities to develop a strong network of peer support and accountability, and voluntary feedback sessions. Digital Professor Academy Orientation Meetings
The Digital Professor Academy is designed to assist faculty in the development of solid pedagogical teaching practices regardless of the instructional environment. The DPA is delivered online and faculty also have opportunity to participate in hands-on workshops that are aligned to the goals of their course as well as the support of Instructional Designers in the FCTL. Plan to attend one of these orientation sessions to learn more about this program.

Accessibility 101
As faculty we know the importance of making our course materials accessible to students; including individuals with disabilities. But how can we do this? This session will provide valuable insights from a visually impaired graduate student on how screen readers navigate documents and practical tips on how you can make your course materials more accessible.

The Increasing Influence of Technology in Rhetorical Studies

Public Affairs Week 2014
Mark your calendar now for events happening during Public Affairs Week (PAW) 2014. PAW is an annual, week-long event developed by and for Missouri State students as a kick off to the public affairs annual theme. The week consists of a series of presentations and special events that relate to this year’s public affairs theme—The Ethical Citizen: Can you make a difference? Some of the highlights include the Hunger Banquet, MSUtalks, the Civic Engagement Conference, and a lecture by Mike Dilbeck on bystander intervention, to name just a few. African American Studies Committee Film Series presents

Conference on Civic Engagement
Building and Sustaining Partnerships for Stronger Communities

The New Technologies of Academic Dishonesty
Date: Monday, September 8

This session will provide an update on current trends in academic dishonesty. The focus will be on new technologies students are using to circumvent the academic integrity policy. These technologies include websites like ClusterFlunk and electronic devices like SmartWatches. The presenters will discuss how to prevent and discourage academic integrity violations and specifically how to deal with the new technologies.
