Cultural competence vs. cultural humility? Toward a new paradigm in advising
Effectively advising students from backgrounds distinct from yours can be a challenge. Recent debates have pitted cultural competence against cultural humanity, thus creating two philosophies concerning advising students from diverse backgrounds. In this session, we will look at what the research tells us about some of the pros and cons of each philosophy, and then move toward a model that integrate the two. In presenting this new paradigm, I hope to better equip academic advisors with the tools they need to ensure that our students are successful.
