The Student Success Coach program builds support systems for first-generation college students. The program was developed in 2020 as part of a Title III cooperative grant. Coaching is a partnership that focuses on the process of learning to be organized, meet deadlines, prioritize projects, and manage time to reach goals. Like an athletic coach, Success Coaches help students become “even better.”
Our Success Coaches are graduate students who have received coaching training, continual support, and professional development through the Center for Academic Success and Transition. Coaches can help students with the following:
- Explore learning styles
- Habits of working
- Identify current difficulties or barriers to success
- Identify strengths and areas of growth
- Assist with academic goal setting
- Develop study and time management skills
- Connect students to other campus resources as needed
Success Coaches are an untapped resource at Missouri State. Many students express concern about time management, study skills, motivation, and accountability. While advisors can (and often do) assist with these concerns, our Success Coaches are trained to help our students identify goals they want to accomplish.
All incoming first-generation students are automatically assigned a Success Coach. However, any student can request a Success Coach through the Center for Academic Success and Transition or by visiting our website. They can also reach out to us directly! Faculty and staff may also refer students for coaching using the Academic Care Team referral form.
If you have questions about our coaching program, reach out to Christina Bowles, Coordinator, Student Success Coaches, or Dr. Tracey Glaessgen, Associate Director, Center for Academic Success and Transition/Director, First Year Programs.
