Meaningful Moments

A message from Provost Clarenda Phillips.

December 12, 2025 by provostadmin

Editor’s note: We’re delighted to share the holiday greetings of Dr. Clarenda Phillips, provost of Missouri State University.

This time of year evokes many feelings. It can be festive and joyful. It is certainly hectic. Sometimes, it is challenging or poignant. It is a deeply meaningful time when we can pause and participate in traditions that are important to us. With our loved ones, we create new memories, and we look back on old ones.

For me, this has been an extraordinary year — my first in Springfield and at Missouri State. As we approach winter break, I am reflecting on the many ways you have welcomed me. Whether by greeting me at an event, attending my office hours or inviting me to speak, you made me feel at home. You shared your stories of teaching and research success with me, and you let me join you in celebrating your wins.

I am also thinking of times when I have witnessed our public affairs mission in action in profound ways. Through events like the Public Affairs Conference and the Missouri State Symphony Orchestra’s sensory-friendly concert, we brought fresh ideas and experiences to our community. We supported Springfield Public Schools’ Back to School Bash, hosted the Elementary Science Olympiad and encouraged future educators with Ag Education on the Move. We honored the MSU Care Clinic’s 10th anniversary — and its impact on more than 33,000 underserved and uninsured patients. With the opening of new facilities in Roy Blunt Hall and Kemper Hall, we expanded our region’s research and workforce training capabilities. And through resources like the Bear Pantry, we watched out for others in our campus community.

There is much to be grateful for. Most of all, I am grateful for our students and the trust they place in us as they build their futures. Our mission is a privilege, which is why I am always happy to proclaim it:

Missouri State University is a community of citizen scholars committed to public affairs. Our innovative teaching, research and service create transformative experiences that benefit individuals and society.

I thank you for your commitment to this mission, and I wish you a restorative holiday. Next year, let’s make even more meaningful moments together.
