How to vote in 2020

October 16, 2020 by Mary Ann Wood

Unsure how you’re going to vote in the upcoming election? The technology age is filled with all kinds of information that may either be biased or altogether misinformation. Some useful sites such as votesmart.com, factcheck.org and allsides.com work to combat false information and provide nonpartisan information.

Don’t know what steps to take to prepare? Use this as a guide for planning how you will vote on Nov. 3.

Vote in-person

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.

If registered in Springfield/Greene County, anyone can vote at the below locations. Or vote at your designated polling location found online or on your voter card. Not sure where you are registered to vote? The Missouri Secretary of State’s webpage offers an online lookup for discovering where you are a registered voter.

Bring your voter ID card or another form of identification. Note, if you do not have identification, you can still cast you ballot at the election location as a provisional ballot – your vote counts!

Absentee or Mail-In Voting Options

Request a mail-in or absentee ballot

You must first request an absentee or mail-in ballot using the form linked above by Oct. 21, 2020. You will then receive your official election ballot in the mail to be returned.

Vote-by-mail absentee with qualified reason

If you are unable cast your ballot at your polling location because you are out of town, incapacitated, religious belief, or you are a COVID-19 at-risk voter, you can absentee vote.

You do NOT need a notary if you meet the “incapacitated” or the “at risk for COVID-19” reason listed on the application. All remaining absentee reasons DO require notarization.

Vote in-person absentee with a qualified reason

The main difference between voting-in-person through absentee voting and voting by mail is that the in-person absentee voters do not need to find a notary to confirm their identity as the actual person casting the requested ballot in-person. The voter’s identity is confirmed in the same manner as a voter being checked in on Election Day by an election judge.

To vote in-person absentee in Greene County, stop by the Elections Center on 1126 North Boonville between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday.

In-person absentee voting will also be open for Greene County voters on Saturday, Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

No excuse vote-by-mail

This year only, every registered Missouri voter is eligible to cast their ballot by mail. If you do not want to vote in person due to concerns about contracting COVID-19 or another reason, you can use the mail-in voting option.

All mail-in ballots must be notarized, without exception.

Absentee/mail-in applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2020 for the Nov. 3, 2020 General Election. Ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day.
