Free steering wheel locks available to Kia, Hyundai owners

The Springfield Police Department has seen a trend of vandalism and attempted thefts of vehicles in Springfield. Many of these incidents involved Kia and Hyundai model vehicles.

In response to the increasing incidents of vehicle theft nationwide, Kia and Hyundai are providing steering wheel locks for the listed years and models of vehicles.

SPD has provided a number to Missouri State. The locks are available to all Missouri State students who present proof of ownership for a qualifying vehicle.

If your vehicle qualifies, you may pick up a free lock from the parking services office, 700 E. Elm St. The office is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Locks may also be picked up directly from SPD at 321 E. Chestnut Expwy. They are available Monday-Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

2024 Statewide Tornado Drill assessment

On March 6th, 2024, Missouri State University participated in the statewide tornado drill. The purpose of the drill was for individuals to review the emergency plans and ensure they are prepared to take the appropriate action in the event of an actual tornado.

An important piece of the drill is to gather improvement feedback. To help us identify areas for improvement, please take one minute to complete this assessment.

Missouri State’s spring break is March 9-17 and is a time for students to unwind, relax and make unforgettable memories. Whether you’re planning a beach getaway, a road trip with friends or just going home, it’s crucial to prioritize safety.

Here are a few essential spring break safety tips to ensure all Bears have a fun and worry-free vacation:

  • Plan ahead: Before embarking on your spring break adventure, take time to plan your trip carefully. Research your destination, familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations, and make sure you have all the necessary lodging and transportation arrangements in place.
  • Travel in groups: There’s safety in numbers, so whenever possible, travel with a group. Not only is it more enjoyable to experience spring break with friends, but it also provides an added layer of security and support in unfamiliar surroundings.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings: Whether you’re lounging on the beach or exploring a new city, it’s essential to stay aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep an eye on your belongings, avoid dark or secluded areas, and trust your instincts if something doesn’t feel right.
  • Drink responsibly: If you choose to drink, do so in moderation and avoid driving or engaging in risky behavior. Pace yourself, stay hydrated and never leave your drink unattended.
  • Protect your health: Spring break is a time to relax and have fun, but it’s essential to prioritize your health and well-being. Practice sun safety by wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated, especially if you’re spending time outdoors.
  • Stay connected: Keep in touch with friends, family or trusted contacts back home during your spring break vacation. Share your itinerary with someone you trust, check in regularly and have a plan in place for emergencies or unexpected situations.

Missouri State to participate in statewide tornado drill March 6

The United States averages 70 deaths per year from tornadoes.

On March 6, Missouri State University will participate in a statewide tornado drill. This drill, part of a coordinated effort to enhance campus safety, will simulate emergency procedures in severe weather.

The Missouri State University Alert system will be activated at 11 a.m., March 6, across all communication channels.

In a tornado watch

During a real emergency, if Greene County is placed under a tornado watch, here’s what you should do:

  • Don’t panic. A tornado watch means that a tornado could form in or near the watch area. It does not mean that a tornado has formed.
  • Pay attention to the weather and review the university’s emergency action plan for severe weather and tornado procedures.
  • Make sure your mobile devices are charged should a storm knock out electricity.

In a tornado warning

If Greene County is placed under a tornado warning it means a tornado has been seen or indicated on weather radar. There is danger to life and property. You should:

  • Go to an identified campus storm shelter.
  • Move quickly and cooperate with those in charge.
  • If you are unsure of the shelter’s location, move to the lowest-level interior room. If you are in a residence hall, follow their severe weather guidelines.
  • If you cannot reach shelter, lie flat in a ditch or depression. Avoid areas subject to flooding.
  • Stay in the shelter until the warning is over. You will get a Missouri State Alert when the warning expires.

During a tornado warning, all classes and campus events are suspended. Campus shuttles will stop operating, and drivers will direct passengers to take shelter in the nearest building.

Violence Prevention through De-escalation video

Earlier today, the Department of Homeland Security(DHS)/Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released a new video titled “Violence Prevention through De-escalation“. It is a 13-minute video that provides good pointers for individuals who may encounter situations where someone becomes aggressive. I encourage you to check it out.
